Chapter Twenty

The truck ride was very awkward.

Not only was Joel sitting right next to his greatest enemies, but he had agreed to join them.

After about ten hours of driving in silence, the Emperor cleared his throat. “Joel, I believe our military won’t be too fond to see you, but I’ll make sure they become loyal once you’ve become a general.”

Joel looked at Alexi and smiled sarcastically. “Great.”

The Emperor licked his lips. “You know… I’m going to enjoy wiping your memory, Joel. I’m going to fruit every second of it.”

“I hope you do, Alexi,” Joel said, folding his arms. “You know – I really hope you do.”

“You don’t even know what’s waiting for you,” the Emperor chuckled. “You’re my general now – you work for me. Willing or not – I’m going to make sure it stays that way.”

“Why me?” Joel asked.

“Because you’re my greatest creation,” Alexi grinned. “My greatest weapon.”

Joel narrowed his eyes. “You wait this long to make a move?”

“I’ve been trying to kill you for years, Joel. One day, a man told me how precious you are… how powerful you could be… that’s why I need you for my cause – for my bidding. My weapon.”

“All because of this… prototype cure inside of me?” Joel scowled.

The Emperor pointed at Joel. “Precisely.”

Joel groaned, leaning forward and resting his face in his hands.

“You have powers you can’t even think of, Joel,” the Emperor looked at Joel with his blistering yellow eyes. “Any human that is cured with the regular cure will only be able to reach Stage Three – when the cure boils yellow. You and I… we can reach Stage Four – when the cure boils green. I’ve been there, Joel, and let me tell you… it is beautiful,” the Emperor smiled, pointing to his eyes. “These are a side-effect of passing Stage Three – yellow. I will have permanent yellow eyes.”

Joel adjusted in his seat, folding his arms again and sitting in silence.

“He knows one of us here personally,” Nex said in his robotic voice.

The Emperor nodded at Nex. “Profugus.”

“Right,” the man in the hoodie chuckled. “I was just waiting for the moment he said something about me.”

Joel cocked his head at the general. “What are you talking about? How am I supposed to know who you are with that mask?”

The man had a familiar laugh. The general tore his gas mask off and let his hood back. This man was bald and had a skull tattooed on his face.

Tom.

Joel’s eye flicked bright blue as he stood up.

The Emperor set his sword against Joel’s chest, ready to slice if Joel made any more movements. “Tom’s title, ‘Profugus’, means ‘Deserter’ in Latin. Though he’s not well-off at our community, he still means well to our cause.”

“I’m gonna have fun watching you go through our… ‘process’,” Tom grinned. “Watching your memories and experiences drift away like ashes.”

“Screw you, Tom,” Joel ticked as he slowly sat back down.

Tom shrugged. “What can I say? I’m for the cause. Just like your buddy… uh… Alex.
